It's available with a variety of powertrains, from a 255-hp four-cylinder to a 362-hp inline-six to a 504-hp V-8. (There's also a plug-in model called the GLE450e, not to mention a couple of AMG variants, but we cover those separately.) Handling is merely OK, as is ride quality, but the plush interior does wonders to distract shoppers from these shortcomings. Buyers of the mid-range GLE450 have a choice between a standard SUV body or a rounded-roof Coupe design. The latter can't accommodate as much luggage as the SUV and its optional third row, but the Coupe is there for those who occasionally value form over function. Expert Tip: The Genesis GV80 is a tough one to beat in this class, given its beautiful execution and agreeable pricing. It's worth a look. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Engines: 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 362-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 504-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 Transmission: 9-speed automatic Drivetrains: rear- or all-wheel drive A 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine sits in the engine bay of the GLE350. A nine-speed automatic transmission transmits torque to either the rear or all four wheels, depending on whether you choose the base model or one with 4Matic all-wheel drive. Stepping up to the GLE450 brings standard all-wheel drive and a 362-hp turbocharged inline-six. Both the GLE350 and GLE450 utilize 48-volt hybrid systems to compensate for turbo lag, among other things. (We review the 381-hp GLE450e plug-in hybrid separately.) While the souped-up Mercedes-AMG GLE53 (also reviewed separately) brings even more heat, the Benz-branded GLE580 represents the most powerful and expensive non-AMG model. Here, a 48-volt system combines with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 to make up to 504 horsepower. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: The GLE's cabin is roomy and luxurious, employing fine materials such as quality leatherette or genuine leather upholstery and wood or brushed aluminum trim. Buyers can also option uncommon amenities like heated armrests and Benz's Air Balance cabin-fragrance system. Second Row: The second row offers plenty of legroom but merely adequate headroom. We suspect the GLE450 Coupe's back seat is even worse in this regard. Third Row: A snug-for-adults third row is available in the SUV (but not the Coupe) for $2100. Cargo Capacity: The GLE SUV has a generous cargo hold. We fit 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row and 26 behind the first. We could do the same in the BMW X5, but not in the Audi Q8, which held fewer bags. The GLE Coupe is less accommodating than the standard SUV, thanks to its sloped roof.
