The L to L Motion That Gets You Out of the Bunker

If your swing tends to get a little flat or wrap around your body, you might get away with it on the grass, but the bunker won’t let it slide. Think about holding an umbrella over your head. You’d keep the shaft pointing straight up to stay dry. The moment you tilt it off to the side, you’re getting rained on. Your bunker swing wants that same up-and-down feel. Swing back until the club makes an L with the shaft pointing up, then swing through to a matching L on the other side. Let your wrists hinge freely up and down without twisting or rolling them, and the clubface will stay square on its own. Back to one umbrella, through to the other. That’s all L to L really is. Next time you’re in a practice bunker, try a few slow swings with that picture in mind and see how much cleaner the club enters the sand.
