Fix These 4 Things to Hit More Consistent Volleys
Three common volley mistakes. Give me about 10 minutes, and we'll get them fixed. If your volleys are dropping into the net, sailing long, or just coming off the paddle inconsistently, the cause is usually one of three things. In this lesson, I walk through each one and give you the fix, along with the reason it works. Here's what we cover: Volleys into the net. Two causes. The first is your target. Most players either pick no target at all or pick one that's too low, which brings the net into play. Give yourself room. Paddle width over the net is the minimum. Paddle height is often better. The second cause is lateral footwork. When you reach instead of stepping, your shoulder dips and pulls the paddle down with it. Volleys going long. We assume this one is an energy problem. We think we hit it too hard. It's usually a trajectory problem, and it comes from too much backswing. When you take the paddle back, the face opens. Now you have to close it again before contact. Shorten the backswing, and the paddle face is already where you need it. Your foundation. Your mechanics have three parts: footwork, foundation, and paddle swing. Foundation is the connection between your feet and your shoulders. If your body is turning, pumping, or pulling back while you volley, clean contact gets hard. Establish your footwork first. Then stay stable and volley from there. Start with the error that shows up most in your game. Net, long, or body. Work that one until it's better, then move to the next. —————————————————————— Tony Roig Pickleball helps players understand the game instead of just collecting tips: strategy, the mental game, and the decisions that decide pickleball rallies. 🌐 Website: tonyroigpickleball.com 🎙 Pickleball Therapy Podcast — dedicated to your pickleball mindset and improvement: https://link.chtbl.com/pickleballtherapy Contact: hello@tonyroigpickleball.com Connect Instagram: @bestpickleballcoach Facebook: @tonyroigpickleball TikTok: bestpickleballcoach
