5 Years of Waiting! Tiling Our Abandoned Portuguese Farmhouse

After five years of waiting, we are finally tiling the floor of our abandoned Portuguese farmhouse outbuilding! What was once a collapsed shelter for chickens and pigs is finally becoming the open-plan kitchen of our dreams, just in time to get ready for hosting Christmas dinner. Laying this terracotta and stone tile floor in 41°C (106°F) heat wasn't without its challenges. From testing out our new RUBI tile cutter to dealing with unexpected tile thickness differences and breaking standard tiling rules to get our doorway pattern perfect, it was a massive week of hard graft. To celebrate getting the perimeter down, we took a break with friends to watch the solar eclipse right from the edge of our land with a barbecue and Omar’s delicious homemade cake.
