We're Removing The Roof of Our 100-Year Old Stone House (By Hand!)

This week on our off grid homestead in rural Italy, we remove the rest of the old roof structure from our 100-year-old stone house by hand. After taking off the roof tiles in the last episode, it is time to expose and remove the entire timber beam structure. What looked like a simple job quickly becomes a much bigger stone house renovation project, with old beams, rotten wood, cob, stone, huge nails, rubble, debris and walls that need to be repaired properly before the new roof can go on. We continue stripping the stone house back to its bare walls, removing the old roof beams, clearing the inside of the ruin, saving materials where we can and preparing the wall tops so the new timber structure can sit level and strong. This is one of the biggest steps so far in our abandoned house renovation and off grid homestead build. We also spend time in the garden preparing a bed for autumn seeds, then show the 3D model of the new roof structure, including the main beams, rafters, outdoor kitchen roof, bread oven support, ventilation layer and clay tiles.
