How to Drive Like a Pro in Pickleball
Do your pickleball drives keep popping up and getting smashed back at you? In this video, Coach Mark breaks down three simple fixes to help you keep your drives low, controlled, and harder for your opponents to attack. Most players think their drive is inconsistent because they are not strong enough, but the real issue is usually swing path, body position, and paddle angle. A good drive is not about hitting the ball as hard as possible. It is about keeping the ball low enough that your opponent cannot easily attack it. In this lesson, you will learn: 1. Why pop-ups happen A drive that floats too high gives your opponent an easy ball to smash. The goal is to drive through the ball, not lift it up. 2. How to swing forward, not up One of the biggest mistakes players make is dropping the paddle and scooping the ball. Instead, think about pushing the ball forward through an imaginary wall behind it. 3. Why body position matters Leaning back opens the paddle face and causes the ball to pop up. Step into the ball, lean your chest slightly forward, and use the cue: nose over toes. 4. How to control your paddle face Even a slightly open paddle face can send the ball too high. Close the paddle face just a little and aim lower so your drive stays controlled. 5. Why 70 to 80% power works better Swinging at 100% often creates errors. A smoother, more controlled swing gives you better placement, better consistency, and fewer pop-ups. Try this simple drill next time you play: hit 10 drives and try to skim the net tape. If the ball keeps popping up, slow your swing down, lean forward more, and swing flatter. Remember: precision over power.
