Most people top off the system, get cold air for a couple of weeks, and end up right back where they started. That is because low refrigerant is a symptom, not the problem. If the system is low, it leaked, and this video shows you how to figure out where and what else may be going on. Depending on the vehicle you may find P0645 for the A/C clutch relay control circuit, P0646 and P0647 for that circuit low or high, P0532 and P0533 for the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor circuit low or high, P0534 for refrigerant charge loss, P1491 or similar cooling fan control codes, B1250 and nearby B codes for blend door and temperature sensor circuits, and U0164 for lost communication with the HVAC control module. Dash messages such as Service A/C, A/C Off Due To High Engine Temp, or Climate Control Service Required can also show up. WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT REFRIGERANT Older vehicles use R134a and most newer vehicles use R1234yf, and the two are not interchangeable. We explain how to tell which one your car uses, why the service ports are different sizes, and why those all in one recharge cans with sealant in them can cause expensive damage to a recovery machine and to your own system.
