The SCARIEST Step Yet?! Off Grid Homestead Stone House Renovation
This week on our off grid homestead in rural Italy, we take one of the biggest steps yet in renovating our first 100-year-old stone house: removing the old roof! Before we can rebuild the roof properly, we need to strip everything back and see what condition the old stone house is really in. We start by clearing inside the ruin, checking the old beams, removing roof tiles, exposing the timber structure, and discovering rot, insect damage, old repairs, mouse nests, broken tiles, cob, concrete, metal sheets and some very unexpected finds along the way. What we originally hoped might be a simpler roof repair quickly becomes clear: this stone house needs a full roof replacement. The old beams are too damaged to reuse structurally, but removing everything gives us a much better look at the walls, the construction and what needs to happen next before the autumn rain arrives.
