Mt. Whitney: Up the CHUTE!

Mt. Whitney via the Chute - With the 99 switchbacks currently closed, summitting Mt. Whitney from the main Mt. Whitney trail requires an ascent of the infamous Mt. Whitney chute. Rising nearly 1500 vertical feet from Trail Camp to Trail Crest, the chute provides a steep and direct alternative route to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet. In this video, we climb Mount Whitney via the Chute from Whitney Portal, navigating soft spring snow, high altitude, and the demanding final push to the summit. The route follows the standard Mount Whitney Trail to Trail Camp before ascending the snow chute to Trail Crest and continuing along the ridge to the top of Mt. Whitney. While the Mt. Whitney trail is a standard hike in summer conditions, in winter conditions the route requires mountaineering experience and proper gear to ascend the chute. If you scored a Mt. Whitney permit for this June, this video will show you current snow conditions on Mt. Whitney and what it's like to ascend the Mt. Whitney chute. Route Information: • Route: Mt. Whitney via the Chute • Trailhead: Whitney Portal • Summit: Mount Whitney (14,505 ft / 4,421 m) • Round Trip Distance: ~22 miles • Elevation Gain: ~6,600 feet #mtwhitney #californiahiking #easternsierra
