I Only Cried Twice: An Accidental Sierra Marathon

What started as an incredible day of hiking in California's High Sierra quickly turned into an accidental off trail marathon. We had a genius plan. Hike from McGee Creek trail up to Big McGee lake and then scramble off route up to Mount Crocker. From there, we would scramble the ridgeline, drop down into Pioneer Basin, hike up to Mono pass, and hike down and out through the beautiful Mosquito Flat trailhead/Little Lakes valley area. This is one of the most beautiful, and relatively untouched, parts of the Eastern Sierra and wow did the views deliver! But, while we planned for about 15 miles of hiking and 5000Ft of climbing, the day quickly turned into a near marathon with almost 8000Ft of climbing, complete with off trail, class 5 climbing. This route had everything: crystal-clear alpine lakes, endless granite peaks, high mountain passes,scrambling, spectacular Eastern Sierra scenery, and miles upon miles of unforgettable hiking. It also came with plenty of unexpected challenges, route finding, exhaustion, and a finish we'll never forget. If you're looking for one of the most beautiful backpacking and hiking areas in California, Pioneer Basin, Big McGee Lake, and Mount Crocker should absolutely be on your list—but make sure you're prepared!
