How a Multifunction Switch Works and the Symptoms When It Fails

What does a multifunction switch do, and what happens when it starts to fail? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic explains how the multifunction switch works, what it controls, and the symptoms to look for when it goes bad. This is a general guide that applies to most makes and models, including Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Dodge, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. The multifunction switch is also known as the combination switch, turn signal switch, stalk switch, or wiper switch. It mounts on the steering column and handles many of the controls you use every time you drive. On many newer vehicles the switch works together with the steering column control module (SCCM) and the body control module, so a scan tool may show body B codes or communication U codes stored for the turn signal, wiper, or headlight circuits. Fast flashing turn signals are usually a bulb issue, but a faulty switch can cause similar behavior.
