How to Replace the Starter on a Jeep Renegade, No Crank No Start Fixed

Does your Jeep Renegade just click when you turn the key, or do nothing at all? In this video, a mechanic shows you how to test and replace the starter motor on a 2015-2023 Jeep Renegade (first generation BU, including the 2019 facelift). We walk through the whole job start to finish so you can do it in your own driveway and save several hundred dollars over a shop bill. SYMPTOMS OF A BAD STARTER One loud click when you turn the key, then nothing Rapid clicking or chattering from the engine bay Engine does not crank at all but the dash lights and radio work fine Starter spins but does not engage the flywheel, you hear a whirring or grinding noise Intermittent no start, works fine cold but fails when the engine is hot Car starts after tapping the starter with a hammer or after a few tries Dash lights stay bright while cranking, which points away from the battery Grinding or metal on metal noise during cranking WHAT WE COVER How to tell a bad starter from a dead battery, a failing ignition switch, or a bad ground Voltage drop and starter solenoid testing before you buy parts Safely disconnecting the battery and getting to the starter Removing the wiring, the main battery cable, and the mounting bolts Installing the new starter, torquing the bolts, and reconnecting everything Starting the engine and confirming the fix WARNING MESSAGES AND FAULT CODES YOU MAY SEE Service Stop/Start System or Stop/Start Unavailable message on the cluster Service Electronic Throttle Control or multiple warning lights from low voltage during cranking P0615 starter relay circuit P0616 starter relay circuit low P0617 starter relay circuit high P0562 and P0563 system voltage low and high Communication codes such as U0100, U0140, and U0155 stored from voltage drop while cranking WHY THE STARTER FAILS Worn brushes inside the starter motor, a failed solenoid or contacts, a worn Bendix drive gear, heat soak from the exhaust, and oil contamination are the usual causes. Renegades with the Stop/Start system cycle the starter far more often than a normal car, so starters on these can wear out earlier than you would expect. DOES THIS APPLY TO MY CAR The Jeep Renegade shares its platform and much of its drivetrain with the Fiat 500X, so this job is nearly identical on the 500X. The 2.4L Tigershark engine used in the Renegade is also found in the Jeep Compass, Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, and Ram ProMaster City, so the starter location and procedure will look very familiar on those vehicles. The 1.4L MultiAir Turbo used in the Renegade is also found in the Fiat 500 Abarth, Fiat 500L, and Dodge Dart.
