From straight on, the boxy mini-ute looks similar to the giant GMC Sierra, but with a rear hatch and adequately sized cargo hold around back instead of a bed. Like many other GMC models, the Terrain is mostly Chevy underneath its chunky sheetmetal, sharing its underlying platform and engine with the Equinox. The Terrain’s interior is a class above the Chevy in terms of appointments, though, and it borrows a number of tech features and interior niceties from the larger Acadia SUV. A new off-road-oriented AT4 variant and a glitzy top-tier Denali model provide options for both trail enthusiasts and valet-frequenters. What's New for 2026? Two new models join the Terrain lineup for 2026: an off-road-focused AT4 trim and a luxed-out Denali variant. GMC states that the Terrain AT4 will provide some additional ride height, beefy all-terrain tires, underbody protection, and red front recovery hooks. As the highest-tier trim, the Terrain Denali will feature more luxurious interior accommodations and additional standard features, including heated rear seats, special 19-inch wheels, and a suspension tuned to maximize ride comfort. Engine, Transmission, and Performance All Terrains come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 175 horsepower. Front-wheel-drive models send power through a continuously variable automatic transmission, but all-wheel-drive models get a conventional eight-speed automatic. Both arrangements are shared with the mechanically similar Chevy Equinox, and acceleration is lethargic in both applications. We've driven all three Terrain trims, and in each one, the ride is agreeable and handling is stable, but there's little character or excitement for the driver to enjoy. Of the three, the AT4's ride is the plushest and is helped by the extra sidewall of that model's all-terrain tires. The Denali is available with large 20-inch wheels with low-profile all-season tires, but that model also comes with a more sophisticated suspension setup that allowed GMC's engineers to tune out the ride harshness associated with such large wheels. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The Terrain is a two-row SUV with seating for five. Its interior design blends rugged themes from elsewhere in GMC's truck lineup with plenty of convenience features and technology, as a vertically oriented 15.0-inch infotainment touchscreen takes up big real estate on the dashboard. All models come with heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start. Interior materials are decent, and the seats are plushly cushioned and comfortable. With an all-terrain AT4 model and a luxury-oriented Denali model joining the Terrain lineup, each gets a unique interior identity to match their respective characters.
