We Spent DAYS Digging Out The Cave on Our Homestead

This week on our off grid homestead in rural Italy, we continue one of the most exhausting jobs we’ve taken on so far: digging out the old cave behind our stone houses by hand. The floor of the cave is packed with natural stone, old bricks, terracotta, glass, and hard material that takes days of digging, drilling, tractor driving and problem solving to remove. We try using our small SDS drill, quickly realise it is not enough, set up temporary electricity to the cave and bring in a bigger drill to start breaking out the old floor properly. This episode shows the brutal reality of building an off grid homestead from scratch: hard physical work, DIY homestead construction, old stone houses, cave work, land restoration, and using what we already have on the abandoned land instead of bringing in concrete. We also re-pot our finger lime tree, explain why we believe the cave is stable using a 3D scan, continue working around the old stone walls and test whether the tractor finally gets up the path we've spent weeks building!
