We’re Tearing Down to Build Up on Our Off Grid Homestead

This week on our off grid homestead in rural Italy, we are tearing down to build up as we continue transforming the cave area around our old stone houses. Before we can properly renovate this part of the homestead, we need to clear the space, dismantle the old wood shack, move and reuse the stones, expose the bread oven, and start figuring out how this forgotten corner of our abandoned land will become useful again. What looked like a messy storage area is slowly becoming the next big step in our homestead transformation. We also begin planning a retaining wall using the stones from the old shack, talk through the next jobs around the cave, bread oven, outdoor kitchen area, old stone walls, and future renovation work, and continue making the land more usable one project at a time. Before leaving the homestead for two weeks, we also set up a temporary drip irrigation system for the terraces. What should have been simple turns into another off grid problem-solving job with IBC tanks, water pressure, blocked outlets, hoses, timers, and a lot of trial and error — but hopefully it keeps the plants alive while we are away.
