The Origins Of The Term Beta 📹
Lynn Hill dropping some climbing etymology lore. How DID the term ‘beta’ make it into the rock climbing lexicon? 📚 Legend has it that in the 80s and 90s, prominent rock climber Jack Mileski would film his climbs in the analog videocassette format, Betamax. When his friends were struggling with technical sequences on the same climbs, Mileski would ask, “Do you want to see the Betamax?” In time ‘Betamax’ was shortened to ‘beta’ and became a mainstay in the climbing dictionary. Clip cut from a recent episode with Lynn, where she chatted about developing her own unique technical sequences - ‘beta’- over her climbing career, underlining the value in individual styles and creative problem solving in climbing! 🧗♀️
